Tough, chunky & used-looking straight out of the box, this is a roughian's boot. Designed by John Fluevog and made at Alpha Calzados in Portugal for Adbusters Media Foundation. It comes with un-hemmed open seams, a smear of mud. and an instruction leaflet: rethink the cool".

Labelled "live without dead time" inside, the outside has a white spot for you to draw your own logo, such as the copywrite-free scribble often seen covering-up Nike adverts in Canada. On the front is a red spot for "kicking corporate ass" and one message on the users' message board warns that after a while the red spot can wear off. Officially, this message board is an activist buying group and the log-on details that come with the shoe are neatly printed as a share certificate.

Canvas is from Ecolution in Romania and made of tough, strong hemp rather than softer cotton fibre to reduce pesticide pollution and water waste as well as to provide a good quality canvas.
