Description

Earthships have been around for quite a few years in the States. Mike Reynolds being one of the pioneers of building in this way. However, they are something quite new in this country - one in Brighton and another one in Fife, Scotland.

What exactly is an earthship? Well this book will reveal everything you need to know to that question, plus more. The earthship as a building concept has evolved over the last 30 years. It comes about as a pioneering form of zero carbon buildings and tackles sustainability in a variety of ways. This book explains the building of the first earthships in the UK and how they are relevant to home building and architecture generally.

Besides the chapters on Thermal Mass, Renewable Energy, Water and Construction Methods the chapter on Building with Waste is how many people think of earthships. With such waste products as tyres (usually the main ingredient) glass bottles, aluminium cans and other discarded materials. The chapter (as is all the book) is extremely thorough in explaining the legislative and regulatory situation, handling and the risk assessment of waste. The last chapter in the book "What is the future of earthships?" is very thought provoking and answers loads of questions as to how this type of building can be built in this country in the future.
A great read.
