Description
Almost 3,000 varieties of apples are grown in these islands (cooking, eating and cider). Each has its own distinctive flavour, uses, places of origin, stories and associated customs.
Sue Clifford and Angela King from Common Ground (our favourite charity), with the help of the food writer Philippa Davenport asked chefs, cooks, food writers and nature writers to offer recipes using named apples. Among the contributors are Raymond Blanc, Joanna Blythman, Linda Brown, Rose Elliot, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Sophie Grigson, Richard Mabey, Nigel Slater and Delia Smith.
The delicious recipes are only a part of this book. If you want to know anymore about anything to do with apples it is in this book. A wealth of useful information, including apple indentification, orchards, wildlife, specialist nurseries, blossom routes, Community Orchards, ideas for Apple Day (created by Common Ground), wassailing, plus a whole section of county by county gazetteer of where varieties originated.
A wonderful book, written with a combination of style and innovation by the pioneers of Common Ground.
